Contemporary Sacred Art

The book Contemporary Sacred Art is a project beyond time and borders, without geographical, gender, or age boundaries. A combination of religion, the spiritual and the earthly, heritage and absolutely spectacular contemporary art. Our publication is an interpretation of ancient rich traditions and historical visual forms in the context of contemporary culture. The book contains a wide selection of works by talented Ukrainian artists in various styles and techniques. Today, artists use a variety of mediums in icon painting, from tempera on blackboard to textiles and works on glass. Ancient sacred themes and motifs of folk art are combined with unusual color palettes and a modern artistic vision that inspires the heart and pleases the eye. Some of these icons, true works of art, show the influence of traditional Ukrainian-Byzantine church art, while others have modern iconographic features. We brought together traditionalists and contemporary icon painters in one project; most of the participants graduated from the Department of Sacred Art at the Lviv National Academy of Arts. The contemporary iconography that is being created in Ukraine today is a completely unique cultural product with recognizable characteristics, but its scale and significance are not sufficiently known and appreciated both in the country and in the world. Our project aims to change this. The publication was created jointly with the ICONART Gallery of Contemporary Sacred Art in Lviv.
